Incognito Does Not Hide Your Network Traffic

Incognito mode is useful. It is also one of the most misunderstood privacy tools on the internet.

Most people treat it like a privacy shield. Open the dark window, browse around, close it, and assume the whole session disappeared. That is not really what happens.

Private browsing mostly protects you from your own browser history. It stops your laptop from saving the sites you visited, the cookies from that session, and some form data. That is handy if you are shopping for a gift on a shared computer or checking an account without staying logged in.

But it does not make your connection private from the network. Your internet provider, school, employer, public WiFi operator, and the websites you visit can still learn things about your session.

What incognito actually hides

Think of incognito as a cleanup mode for your browser. When you close the window, it usually clears local traces from that session.

That is real privacy, but it is local privacy. It helps with people who use the same device after you. It does not hide the traffic leaving the device.

What incognito does not hide

When you visit a website, your traffic still has to travel through a network. At home, that starts with your internet provider. At work, it may pass through company monitoring systems. Incognito does not hide your IP address. It does not stop websites from seeing that you visited. It does not stop your ISP from seeing domains or traffic patterns. It does not turn off tracking built into websites, apps, or ad networks.

This is why browser makers are careful about the wording. Private browsing means private from other people using the same browser, not anonymous on the internet. The Google Incognito lawsuit made this more visible, but the basic rule has been true for years: private window does not mean private connection.

Where a VPN fits

A VPN solves a different problem. It encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server. The local network sees encrypted traffic going to one VPN server instead of a list of sites, DNS requests, and app connections.

That does not make you invisible. The VPN provider becomes the first hop of trust, and websites can still track you if you log in or accept cookies. But a VPN does change what your ISP, hotel WiFi, library WiFi, or coffee shop network can see.

The simple rule is this: use incognito when you do not want the browser to keep local history. Use a VPN when you do not want the network to read as much about your traffic.
