Incognito Keeps History Off Your Laptop. A VPN Protects the Network.
Incognito mode has a branding problem. The name sounds like a disguise. In real life, it is more like cleaning up after yourself before someone else uses the computer.
That is useful. If you share a laptop, shop for a gift, log into a second account, or do not want a site saved in your browser history, private browsing helps. Chrome's own help page says Incognito does not save your browsing history, cookies, site data, or form entries after you close the window.
But that only describes what happens on your device. It does not mean the coffee shop WiFi, school network, office network, internet provider, or the sites you visit suddenly lose sight of you.
What Incognito actually hides
Think of Incognito as a temporary browser session. It starts fresh, avoids saving local history, and throws away most session cookies when you close it.
That helps with everyday stuff:
- You can use a shared computer without leaving the exact page in the browser history.
- You can log into a second account without mixing cookies with your normal session.
- You can avoid some local autocomplete and form history clutter.
It is not pointless. It is just local privacy, not network privacy.
What Incognito does not hide
Your IP address still shows up to websites. Your internet provider can still see that your connection is going somewhere. On many networks, the administrator can still see domains, timing, traffic volume, and device behavior. Security companies and consumer guides say the same thing in different words: private browsing does not make you invisible online.
HTTPS protects the contents of most modern websites, which is good. Your ISP usually cannot read the exact text on a secure page. But metadata still leaks useful clues. If your device asks for a domain, connects at a certain time, and moves a certain amount of traffic, that says more than most people expect.
The FTC has also pointed out that ISPs can have a broad view of consumer browsing behavior. Deleting cookies or switching to private browsing does not change the fact that your traffic still has to pass through the provider.
Where a VPN fits
A VPN does not replace Incognito. They solve different problems.
Incognito is for the browser. A VPN is for the connection. When your VPN is on, your device sends traffic through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN server. The local WiFi and your ISP see an encrypted connection to that VPN server instead of a readable trail of DNS requests and direct site connections.
Websites can still know what you do after you log in. If you sign into Gmail, Google knows it is you. If you post on Reddit, Reddit knows your account did it. A VPN is not a magic invisibility cloak.
But it does change the first hop. That matters on hotel WiFi, airport WiFi, campus WiFi, apartment building networks, and any place where you do not control the router.
