Incognito Mode Is Not a VPN

Incognito mode sounds stronger than it is. The name makes it feel like you put on a mask and disappeared from the internet. You did not.

Private browsing is useful. I use it when I am logging into a second account, buying a gift, testing a website, or searching for something I do not want saved in my browser history. That is the job it was built for.

But incognito mode is not a privacy shield for your internet connection. It does not hide your traffic from the network you are using. It does not make your IP address vanish. It does not stop your internet provider from seeing that your device connected to certain services.

What incognito mode actually does

Most private browsing modes do a few simple things. They stop your browser from saving local history from that session. They clear session cookies when you close the window. They usually avoid keeping form entries and cached files around after you are done.

That means the next person who opens your laptop will not see those pages in your browser history. A shared family computer will not keep you logged into the account you opened. A shopping site may treat you like a fresh visitor once the window closes.

That is real value. It is just local value. It protects against someone using your device after you, not against the network carrying your traffic while you browse.

What it does not hide

Your internet connection still has to go somewhere. When you open a site, your device still asks the network to connect. Your IP address is still visible to the websites and apps you use. Your internet provider can still see connection metadata. On work or school networks, admins may still see the domains your device reaches.

HTTPS helps a lot. It protects the contents of most modern web pages, so the network usually cannot read your passwords or the exact article you are reading. But HTTPS does not make the fact that you visited a domain disappear.

Incognito mode also does not change what websites collect about you. If you log into an account, that site knows it is you. If your browser fingerprint is recognizable, a site may still connect dots. If you download a file, that file is still on your device unless you delete it.

Where a VPN fits

A VPN solves a different problem. It encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server. The coffee shop, airport, hotel, school, or internet provider sees an encrypted connection to the VPN instead of a readable list of every domain your device is reaching.

That does not make you invisible. The VPN provider becomes the first hop of trust, and websites can still know who you are when you log in. But it does reduce what the local network and your ISP can learn from your browsing.

The clean way to think about it is this: incognito mode protects your browser history on the device. A VPN protects your connection on the network. They are not competitors. They cover different gaps.

If you use public WiFi, travel a lot, or just do not want your internet provider getting an easy view of your traffic patterns, a basic VPN is enough.
