Library WiFi Is Not Private Just Because It Feels Quiet
A public library feels different from an airport or a coffee shop. It is quiet. People are reading. The WiFi name usually looks official. There is a help desk ten feet away.
That calm feeling can make library WiFi seem safer than other public WiFi. In practice, it is still a shared public network. Your phone or laptop is connecting to an access point used by strangers, guests, students, job seekers, tourists, and anyone else in range.

CISA also calls out two risks that matter on public wireless networks: fake access points and wireless sniffing. A fake access point can copy a familiar network name. Wireless sniffing is just listening to traffic moving through the air. Neither requires a movie-hacker setup.
Libraries care about privacy, but the network is still public
This is the part people get wrong. Libraries are usually more privacy-minded than commercial hotspots. The American Library Association says libraries should make privacy policies clear, limit unnecessary tracking, and avoid monitoring software unless users are told what is happening.
That is good. It is one reason libraries are valuable.
But a good privacy policy does not magically secure every device on the WiFi. It does not stop someone nearby from setting up a lookalike network. It does not fix an old laptop with file sharing turned on. It does not control every third-party app running on your phone.
So the smart approach is not “libraries are unsafe.” It is “libraries are public.” That is enough reason to use basic protection.
What to do before you connect
You do not need a complicated security routine. A few small habits cover most normal risk:
- Confirm the WiFi name. If there are three similar networks, ask staff which one is real.
- Turn off file sharing. Public networks are not the place to expose folders from your laptop.
- Use HTTPS sites. If the browser warns you about a site, do not ignore it.
- Keep your device updated. Old operating systems and browsers make public WiFi riskier.
