Library WiFi Still Counts as Public WiFi
Library WiFi feels different from coffee shop WiFi. It is quieter. It is public service. Nobody is hovering over a latte with three laptops and a weird antenna.
But from your phone or laptop's point of view, it is still a shared public network. You do not control the router. You do not know who else is connected. You usually do not know what logging is turned on. That does not mean you should panic. It just means you should treat it like public WiFi.
The FTC's public WiFi advice is still the practical baseline: check for HTTPS, be careful with sensitive information, and remember that a secure site encrypts what you send to that site. That helps a lot. It does not make the whole network private.
What can still leak at the library
Most major websites use HTTPS now, so the actual contents of your email or bank page are usually encrypted. That is good. The old fear that everyone nearby can casually read every password is less true than it used to be.
Still, public WiFi can expose more than people expect:
- Domain lookups. DNS requests can show which services your device is trying to reach, even when page contents are encrypted.
- Traffic patterns. Timing, app connections, and large downloads can say a lot without showing exact page text.
- Device chatter. Phones and laptops constantly sync mail, photos, cloud drives, messages, updates, and analytics in the background.
- Network trust mistakes. If your device treats the library like a trusted network, file sharing or discovery settings may be looser than they should be.
A library is not suspicious just because the WiFi is public. The risk is the setup: open or shared access, lots of strangers, and no real visibility into how the network is managed.
HTTPS helps, but it is not the same as a VPN
HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and the website. A VPN protects the connection between your device and the VPN server. Those are different layers.
Think of HTTPS like putting a sealed envelope in the mail. The contents are hidden, but people handling the mail can still see the destination. A VPN is more like putting that sealed envelope inside a locked courier bag before it leaves your table.

- Turn off file sharing and AirDrop-style discovery when you are on public networks.
- Avoid installing updates or apps from random popups on the network login page.
- Use your mobile hotspot for anything especially sensitive if you do not trust the network.
- Turn on a VPN before opening the browser, not after you are already signed in everywhere.
The main point is not that library WiFi is dangerous. It is that public networks should get public-network habits. Libraries are great places to work. Their WiFi just should not get a free pass because the room feels calm.
