Private Browsing Does Not Hide Your IP Address

Incognito mode feels like a privacy button. You open a new window, the browser turns dark, and it says your history will not be saved. That sounds pretty private.

It is useful. It is just useful for a smaller problem than most people think.

Private browsing keeps your browser from saving certain things on your own device after you close the window. Chrome says Incognito limits what is saved to your device. Mozilla says private browsing does not save browsing history and cookies locally.

That is local privacy. It helps if you share a laptop with a roommate, borrow a family computer, shop for a gift, or log into an account without leaving cookies behind.

It does not make your connection invisible.

What incognito actually hides

Think of private browsing like cleaning up after yourself in the room you are sitting in. It does not change what happened outside the room.

When you use incognito or private browsing, your browser usually avoids saving:

But the websites you visit still know someone visited. Your internet provider can still see the connection leaving your house. A school, hotel, airport, library, or office network may still see the domains your device talks to. Your IP address still points back to your network.

What it does not hide

The easiest way to remember it: incognito protects you from your browser history, not from the network.

It does not hide your IP address from websites. It does not encrypt all of your traffic from the WiFi network. It does not stop your ISP from seeing that your connection reached a certain service. It does not make a work or school device private from management software installed on that device.

That last one matters. If you are on a company laptop, private browsing is not a magic curtain. The browser may skip local history, but device management, security tools, DNS logs, and company VPN settings can still tell a different story.

Quick rule: Use incognito when you do not want the browser to remember the session. Use a VPN when you do not want the network to see your normal home IP and connection details.

Where a VPN fits

A VPN solves a different problem. Instead of cleaning up browser history afterward, it wraps your connection in an encrypted tunnel before traffic leaves your device.

On public WiFi, that means the network sees encrypted traffic going to the VPN server. It does not get the same plain view of the domains your apps and browser are contacting. Websites see the VPN server's IP address instead of your home or coffee shop IP.

This is why private browsing and a VPN work well together, but they are not replacements for each other. Incognito is about what stays on the device. A VPN is about what leaves the device.
