Public Library WiFi Is Still Public WiFi
Library WiFi feels different from coffee shop WiFi.
It feels calmer. More official. Less like the guy in the corner is running three strange browser extensions and watching everyone connect. You are in a public building, maybe using a network called something clean like "Library Guest." It is easy to assume that means it is safer.
But from a privacy point of view, public library WiFi is still public WiFi. The same basic risks apply.
What the library network can see
Modern HTTPS protects the content of most websites. That is good. Someone on the network should not be able to read your bank password or the text inside your email just because you are using a shared connection.
But HTTPS does not hide everything. The network can often still learn useful metadata, including:
- Which domains your device connects to, especially if your DNS is not encrypted.
- When you connect, how long you stay connected, and how much data you move.
- What apps are phoning home in the background while you think you are only checking one website.
- Your device name or local network behavior, depending on how the WiFi is configured.
None of that means your librarian is spying on you. That is not the point. The point is that a shared network has shared-network visibility. It may also use filters, captive portals, logging tools, or outside vendors that help manage the connection.
Why libraries are a special case
People use library computers and library WiFi for private things. Job applications. Immigration forms. Health research. School accounts. Banking. Housing searches. Legal documents.
That makes the stakes higher than casual scrolling at a cafe. A library is one of the few places where someone may be handling sensitive life stuff on a network they do not control.
The FTC has warned that internet providers can collect large amounts of personal data, including web browsing data and app usage patterns. The same broad idea matters on any network you do not own: the operator of the connection sits in a powerful position. They may not see everything, but they can see enough to build a rough picture.
What a VPN changes
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel from your phone or laptop to the VPN server. Once it is connected, the library WiFi mostly sees one thing: encrypted traffic going to the VPN.
That means the local network is no longer seeing each site and app connection separately. Your DNS requests can go through the tunnel too, which helps hide the list of domains your device is asking for.
A VPN does not make you anonymous. Your browser login still identifies you to Gmail, Facebook, your bank, or your school portal. If you are on a library-owned computer, a VPN on your phone will not protect what happens on that public machine. And if you download malware, a VPN will not save you from that.

- Avoid saving passwords on shared computers.
