What Your ISP Can Learn From Your Browsing

Your internet provider sits in an awkward spot. Every time your phone, laptop, or TV goes online, that traffic has to pass through the company you pay for internet access.

That does not mean your ISP can read everything you type. Most major websites use HTTPS now, so the contents of your banking session, email, checkout form, or private message are encrypted.

But it also does not mean your ISP is blind. There is still a lot of useful data around the edges.

What your ISP can usually see

Think of HTTPS like putting a letter inside an envelope. The message is hidden, but the outside of the envelope still says where it is going.

Can they sell it?

In the US, the simple answer is: there is no single clean rule that says every ISP must treat browsing data the same way.

The FCC passed broadband privacy rules in 2016 that would have required stronger consent before internet providers used or shared sensitive browsing data. Congress repealed those rules in 2017 before they fully took effect. Since then, ISP privacy has been a mix of FTC enforcement, FCC authority, state privacy laws, company privacy policies, and whatever consent screens customers click through.

So when people ask, "Is my ISP selling my browsing history?" the honest answer is more annoying than yes or no. They may not be selling a neat file called your browser history. But they can collect network data, use it for advertising or analytics depending on their policy, share certain categories with partners, and build profiles from what your connection reveals.

Quick privacy check: Search your ISP's privacy policy for words like "browsing," "advertising," "partners," "precise location," "DNS," and "opt out." If the policy is vague, assume the company is giving itself room.
